This recipe won “Best Cook In The Country” honors for Helen Kubisiak in “Country Magazine”. It’s always a hit when I make it for company.

Helen’s Toffee Squares

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Ingredients:
1 cup butter, softened to room temperature
1 cup brown sugar
1 egg yolk
2 tsp. vanilla
1 7/8 cup all purpose flour
6 milk chocolate bars, unwrapped 1.65 oz. ea. (I use Hersheys)
1 cup chopped pecans

Cream butter and brown sugar together until fluffy and light colored. Mix egg yolk and vanilla into butter mixture. Gradually beat flour in until smooth and blended. ( Dough will be thick). Spread evenly on ungreased 14″ x 16″ x 1″ baking pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes, or until crust is golden brown and puffy. Remove from oven. Arrange unwrapped chocolate bars
evenly over surface of crust; let stand 5 minutes to soften chocolate. Spread chocolate evenly over crust. Sprinkle with chopped nuts. Cool; cut into squares. Yield : 40 squares.
