Cookie Jars and Ruggalach

In the 1970’s, Andy Warhol, the artist, started collecting 1930-1940 era cookie jars, mostly from flea markets. In 1987, his collection of 175 ceramic cookie jars fetched a whopping $250,000 at auction, according to Wikipedia.

Some of the more highly sought after cookie jars were manufactured by the McCoy Company, which began around 1939 until 1987; the Brush Pottery Company who is said to be the first company to manufacture ceramic cookie jars in the 1930s; Hull Pottery, known for its Little Red Riding Hood cookie jar; Red Wing Pottery and others.

I recently had lunch with some lady friends in a little town near my home and was amazed to see over 1,000 cookie jars on display there. I’d heard about it, but it was still hard to imagine seeing that many cookie jars in one location. They aren’t for sale, they’re a collection that belongs to the owner of the cafe.

We make them in our kosher bakery and bake them to a golden color so they arrive at your home, ready to serve; it’s that easy! This gourmet food has a place at the end of any meal, especially at holiday time. Ruggalach is the Jewish pastry of Ashkenazic origin that has many spellings but one pronunciation. Most commonly spelled rugelach, it is also referred to as rugulach, rugalach, rugalah, rogelach and rugala. Be sure to have a look at our kosher cakes as well.
