Nebraska Beef

“WHERE’S THE BEEF?” is what you’re likely to hear in Nebraska with it’s multitude of famous steak houses: Brother Sebastian’s, Cascio’s, Anthony’s, The Outback, Gorat’s, Flemings, Misty’s, Lone Star and Texas T-Bone to name a few. One very important steakhouse name is missing, sad to say . . .Dreisbach’s Steakhouse was a family owned restaurant in Grand Island, Nebraska for many, many years. It even survived the 1980 tornados, not without damage, but it was remodeled and kept on going. People came from near and far to have a Dreisbachs steak and even with reservations you had to wait thirty minutes or more to be seated. Alas, the family retired and sold the business but it was never the same. The beautiful remodeled building is all that is left of Dreisbachs, which now houses offices for the county.

Many small towns in Nebraska are known for their great steak houses. In Farwell, near Hwys. 92 and 11, you’ll find the Longhorn Saloon Steakhouse with large juicy steaks and homemade side dishes – reservations are suggested, (308 336-3306). Another great restaurant, the Gold Nugget is located in Boelus, Nebraska near Hwys. 11 and 58. In addition to the fabulous bacon wrapped filets and other mouth watering steaks, they have a wide variety of salads on their salad bar. Seafood is available as well as chicken, hamburgers, etc. Reservations are suggested, (308 996-4479.) Both of these steak houses are on the main street as you drive into town so you can’t miss them. They are worth your time to check them out.

My husband and I have each traveled for many years with our jobs and were able to find great places to eat by talking to the locals in the area. We noted that many of them did not stand out as you drove by, in fact people would refer to them as “a little hole in the wall”, but once we had the experience of eating there it was on our list of places to go back to. The best steaks we’ve ever had were in Nebraska.

Omaha Steaks is known not only for its mouth watering steaks but for its appetizers, out of this world au gratin potatoes, ham, chicken, seafood and delicious sweet treats like cakes, cheesecakes and cookies.

I ordered some au gratin potatoes along with my meat order from Omaha Steaks because it would be nice to have them in the freezer when we have company. One noon I decided to have a portion of the potatoes with my lunch and I was hooked. They were SO tasty that within a few weeks they were GONE – none left to serve to company – now I’ll have to order more from Omaha Steaks or make my own recipe from scratch.
