Here’s an old fashioned recipe that will remind you of days gone by. Custard is such a quick and easy dessert recipe -- a refreshing change from a lot of the heavy desserts people sometimes eat after a meal– it’s just like Grandma used to make.
4 eggs
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 tsp. salt
1-12 oz. can evaporated milk
1 cup water
1 tsp. vanilla
Break eggs into a mixing bowl. Add sugar and salt and mix well. Pour in evaporated milk, water and vanilla and beat well. Pour into custard cups* then set cups into a 9×13 inch pan and put about an inch of water in the pan. Bake in a 350 degree oven for 35 minutes or until done. The best way to test it is to insert a table knife into the center of the custard. If it comes out clean, the custard is done. Once custard is done, cool individual cups on a cooling rack. If they’re not going to be eaten right away, refrigerate until ready to serve. Yield: 6 servings.
* Nutmeg may be sprinkled on the top of the custard prior to baking if desired.

Ingredients:
1 white cake mix
2 cups milk
2 eggs
1 box chocolate pudding, instant
2 oz. of red food coloring
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1 Tbls vinegar
1 tsp soda
Combine the first six ingredients and mix well. Add soda to vinegar; once soda is dissolved, add vinegar mixture to batter and mix well. Bake in 2-8″ greased and floured pans @ 375 degrees for 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
Let the cakes cool for five minutes before removing from pans. To remove cakes from the pans, run a knife along the edge of the pan. Place a cooling rack over the pan. Hold the pan and rack firmly and flip the pan over; tap gently on the counter to separate the cake from the pan. Cool completely before you frost the cake. You may have to trim the cakes so they are flat on top prior to putting layers together. Run a long knife through each cake.
Frosting:
1/2 cup milk
1/2 cup cream
5 tablespoons all-purpose flour
2 sticks (1 cup) real butter
1 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Combine milk, cream and flour in a small pan and cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until mixture begins to thicken. Cool completely; then cream butter, sugar and vanilla until light and fluffy. Stir cooled milk mixture into butter mixture and beat until icing reaches spreading consistency.
