Connecticut is known as The Constitution State based on its colonial constituion of 1638-1639.It’s history dates back to early colonial times. Connecticut played a great part in developing our early American government.

Connecticut’s popular nickname however, is The Nutmeg State. The origin of this nickname is unknown. According to Wikipedia, it may come from the sailors who returned from their voyages with nutmeg, and in the 18th-19th centuries, it was a very valuable spice. Another possibility is that it may have began in the early machined tin nutmeg grinders which were sold by peddlers in the early days of Connecticut history.

The cuisine you are likely to experience in Connecticut includes white clam pie,as well as other types of seafood because of its fishing industry, along with the use of dairy products from the area dairy industry. You will easily find a hamburger sandwich, and in the New Haven area, Italian cuisine is dominant. If you are partial to Irish American cooking,that is most apt to be found in the interior portions of Connecticut, including the Hartford area.

Hasty pudding, (originally called “Indian Pudding), can sometimes be found in rural areas of Connecticut. It is served as an appetizer as opposed to a dessert. Amongst the ingredients are milk, cream, cornmeal, maple syrup, eggs and nutmeg. It takes about two hours to bake, so it’s not really “hasty”. A few other ingredients that are native to New England are cranberries, maple syrup potatoes, parsley, sage and nutmeg.

Some places to see When visiting the state of Connecticut are it’s capital, which is Hartford ; the center of the population of the state is in Cheshire, the bedding plant capital of Connecticut; and Cleveland, the heart of New Connecticut, to name a few.

Give a shout to the Connecticut Huskies while you’re there and you may be invited to one of their tailgate parties. Sports teams are known to create a bond amongst their faithful fans, so enjoy the celebration.
